De Gwangju a Tiananmen

Abstracto
Comenzando con el Levantamiento de Gwangju en 1980, se produjo una reacción en cadena de revueltas y levantamientos en el este de Asia. Este documento delinea las características esenciales del Levantamiento de Gwangju: la “hermosa comunidad” entre los habitantes de la ciudad; su capacidad espontánea para defender, gobernar y administrar sus propios asuntos; y la rápida auto-organización del Ejército Ciudadano y Comité de Lucha Ciudadano-Estudiante. La importancia primordial de Gwangju en la motivación del levantamiento exitoso de junio de 1987 en Corea del Sur condujo a la posterior condena de los ex presidentes Chun Doo-hwan y Roh Tae-woo. Se mencionan otros movimientos de Asia oriental de la década de 1980 y principios de la de 1990: Filipinas (1986), Birmania (1988), China (1989), Nepal (1990), Tailandia (1992) e Indonesia (1998); Se presta especial atención a Birmania. Beginning with the Gwangju Uprising in 1980, a chain reaction of revolts and uprisings occurred in East Asia. This paper delineates essential features of the Gwangju Uprising: the “beautiful community” among the city's citizens; their spontaneous ability to defend, govern and manage their own affairs; and the rapid self-organization of the Citizens' Army and Citizen-Student Struggle Committee. The paramount significance of Gwangju in motivating the successful June 1987 uprising in South Korea led to the subsequent conviction of former presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo. Other East Asian movements of the 1980s and early 1990s are touched upon: the Philippines (1986), Burma (1988), China (1989), Nepal (1990), Thailand (1992), and Indonesia (1998); special attention is paid to Burma. These movements help us to understand popular forms of consciousness and possible actions among citizenry in the 21st century.
